Work In Progress: Landing Platform Part 2

I begin painting on the layer below the sketch with a hard round brush set to 100%. Remember that the sketch layer mode is set to multiply so the white areas are now transparent. I also rename the second layer "colors" to keep track of it.

I want the feel of a low sun and a warm quality so I select mostly reds, yellows, and gray browns. I used blue to give myself a sense of where the sky is but it that will be covered in yellow tone too. The saturated colors look like a comic book panel but the purpose is to get the main colors in place or "blocked in". After I have set up my values I will paint in the shadows and highlights to get rid of the cartoony look.

To the right on a separate layer I have made a notation about the light source. This helps me remember if I get lost in the image. As you can see, more adjustment will be necessary to get the direction right.

I've given myself some leeway to make changes and adjust color but as you'll see, sometimes it is necessary to go back to go forward.

Up Next: Taking Away Color.
