This weekend a supposedly professional sports figure did something insensitive and destructive. Yeah, yeah, I know you've heard it before. Even the local paper runs a regular police blotter in the sports section but this one hits close to home.
The Nashville speedway gives a Gibson guitar trophy to the winning driver in the Nationwide series. Artist, Sam Bass paints the guitar and creates a unique piece of history. This year the winner of the race was Kyle Busch and within moments of receiving the trophy he had managed to destroy it.
Pete Townsend he is not.
I cringe at seeing a piece of art get destroyed, especially by an overblown, careless gesture. Artists put hours of work and energy into the pieces they create. Sam Bass said that he was "heartbroken" to see it destroyed within seconds of being awarded. I personally don't care for Sam Bass's art but I understand the energy he puts into the work and appreciate it for that. Seeing it reduced to a misguided statement makes me angry beyond belief.
Kyle Busch later told Bass that he would buy two more identical to it. What Kyle fails to realize is that each is unique, each has value, and his crass offer underscores his opinion of others efforts and the value he places on their work. I can't even begin to imagine what sort of value he must place on money.
This is also exemplifies what some people think of the efforts artists. Bass is a professional and would probably do the work. I would be tempted to make a statement of my own and refuse to replace something Bush clearly doesn't value.

SyFy
Oh, NBC. Why?
If you simply showed science fiction like you used to and got rid of the wrestlers maybe you'd be able to sell advertising space again. I know it's more complicated than that but Sci-Fi was one of the last reasons for me to hold on to cable. The programming has gotten progressively worse so I looked to get my Science Fiction elsewhere.
Sci-Fi had already watered down it's content for a wider audience. I dread to think what it will become.
The name reads like someone from a 70s roller disco movie.
