Dougie's Closet

This image was created for a class I took in 2000. It is created in graphite on Strathmore Board and shows a boy stepping through his closet door into his imagination. I enjoy working with my hands and, in truth, this was before I became serious about working digitally. Presently, I am working on techniques to reincorporate the hand-drawn with the digital. So far I'm not ecstatic with the initial results but I am hopeful.

I often find myself wishing I still had the imagination I did when I was a child. Everything seemed more magical and anyplace could be a portal to "somewhere else".

To get the image right I asked a neighbor if they could "lend me" their child for a few minutes. I also made sure that she was near by when I took my reference photos. Luckily the day I took the reference it was clear and sunny so the imagery was fantastic. I wanted the planet in the back to be lit from above and I also wanted to play with the rimlight on the figure. Graphite lends itself to such gentle gradation and sharp contrast but only if the whites can be kept clean!

I have to wonder just what the rest of the scene must be like! I guess that's for another project.
